I actually had the opposite opinion as you when I first heard of them; Chespin was downright cute, Fennekin was cool, I guessed, but Froakie looked pretty dumb to me. But he's warming up to me. Besides, he makes a nice gijinka.
I for one like the new starters, although I was surprised or startled, at first.

It's really cute, but the other two look a little derpy, so now it's even.
Honestly, I wish they were a little mixed:

I actually like them all a lot. Massive improvement on 5th Gen. Not sure what the grass one is meant to be, though... its Japanese name is Harimarron, hari coming from "harinezumi" meaning "hedgehog" and "marron" being French for "chestnut"... so... it's some kind of... hedgehog... chestnut hybrid?
